In the time it will take you to read this information, a child will be severely injured and admitted to an emergency room as a result of a playground-related accident. It is estimated that each year over 170,000 such injuries occur. Approximately 20 children will die from playground-related injuries.
Children of all ages will be drawn to the wonderful play structures that exist within our community. Be sure you keep your child(ren) safe by following these safety suggestions:
Supervision: Young children are constantly challenging their own abilities, very often not being able to recognize potential hazards. It is estimated that over 40% of all playground injuries are directly related to lack of supervision in some way.
Age-appropriate Activities: Children’s developmental needs vary greatly from age 2 to age 12. In an effort to provide a challenging and safe play environment for all ages, it is important to make sure that the equipment in the playground setting is appropriate for the age of the intended user. Gates Recreation and Parks Department provides playground structures for all ages within its parks, as follows:
Safe Play Equipment: Make sure the play structure and surrounding area are safe with no protrusions, tripping hazards, or broken or worn equipment. If you identify a potential injury hazard at a playground site, do not let your child use it and notify the owner/operator of the play area of the condition so that they may take steps to eliminate the hazard.
